how to draw out the making of a cherry pie for way too long

Posted on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 am

Day 1: Attend Farmers’ Market and purchase 3 cups of sour cherries. Put them in the refrigerator and forget about them.

Day 2: Page through 5 cookbooks and decide that you don’t like any of their cherry pie recipes. Decide to use a rhubarb pie recipe and substitute cherries. Realize that you spent so much time being irritated at the lack of decent-sounding cherry pie recipes that you no longer have time to make a pie today.

Day 3: Read Jerry’s post about how you need to cook or freeze sour cherries promptly or else they’ll turn brown. Panic a bit because you have no idea how long it’s been since these cherries were picked. Find an old safety pin on the dryer that you can use to pit the cherries. Pit the cherries and feel proud of yourself in a Susie Homemaker kind of way. Consider postponing making the pie because pitting cherries was annoying. Suck it up and actually make the pie. Don’t eat the pie tonight because it won’t be cool enough to cut before bed.

Day 4: Eat pie for breakfast.

Day 5 (okay, a month later): Post pictures on your blog to document that the pie was actually made.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Hi Terrah — I like the cherries pattern in the crust, I’ll bet it tasted scrumptious!

My ‘quick and easy recipe’ for fast and easy cherry pie:
1. Pit and wash the cherries Jacob got from the farm.
2. Stir cherries into the contents of one can of cherry pie filling.
3. Pour mixture into packaged frozen pie crust in bottom of 10″ pie pan.
4. Place strips of the other pie crust criss-crossed on top.
5. Bake at 425° (preheated oven) for 35 to 45 minutes. Protect outer crust from excessive browning as necessary by covering with foil when needed.

You will be eating cherry pie and ice cream within two hours of the gleam in your eye.

My recipe is:
Let pie cool or cover with homemade vanilla ice cream and eat.
See..that’s so much easier than the way you did it.
You should have taken cherries from blogstock.

I did consider taking home some cherries from blogstock, but I didn’t really want to pit any more. I know that Jacob would have pit them, but quality control would have become an issue then. :-)
