garden update

It’s still growing! This afternoon I went out and picked about 20 pear and cherry tomatoes and 4 Anaheim chilies. The cantaloupe has tons of blooms and one tennis ball sized melon. And the regular tomatoes are filled with green tomatoes.

More Anaheims have ripened in the past month than the rest of the summer combined. I’ve been freezing those. I also froze 10 whole tomatoes to throw into soups this winter.

I’m starting to think about what to do with all the green tomatoes since they surely won’t ripen before a hard frost gets them. On the other hand, it’s October 7 and is a balmy 64 degrees outside, so who knows?

Overall, I’d call my first ever garden a success! Then there’s the inevitable question: “What will you plant next year?” I don’t know - I plan to take all winter to think about it!

It is truly amazing how much time it takes for that first ripe tomato.
And worse yet, last years first 2 weeks of ripe tomatoes did not taste right. It was late in the season before the flavor got to be like it should.

I am hoping to get our garden planted this weekend. I know it seems late (and probably is) but this is the first chance I have had.

Apparently there is a really good green tomato salsa recipe in Simply in Season. If you don’t have Simply in Season and want the recipe let me know

Since that’s one of my favorite cookbooks, you’d think I would have looked there already. (rolling eyes at self)

Congrat’s om your garden. Ours was a total bust this year. We planted late and then it got and stayed really hot.
On another note, we are sure enjoying a lot of the recipes from that book you gave me - even if the produce is coming from the farmer market. Those pickled beets are the best I have ever had. Thanks again for the book.
