The base of your problematic thoughts is in your statement "I want everyone to follow all laws."
I believe that we have laws and a country. Or neither. My stance is pretty simple. We all have to follow the laws. The government knows exactly where to find me. It should be that way with everyone. Legal immigration is the answer. I guess we could talk for days about this but I don't think we're far apart.
Maybe I should have said, "I want everyone to follow all laws that I feel are ethical and are enforced in an ethical way"? Illegal immigration is kind of like abortion - if you want it to go away, there are a lot of other significant issues that need to be addressed first.
So many people approach immigration from fear and anger. If we were less reactionary, I think a lot could be solved!
This will probaly meander a bit...sorry:
Individuals as well as larger communities make bad decisions/laws sometimes. There are few matters that are absolutely "black and white". Most people want to fudge on "Thou shalt not kill"!!! Which do you think God is more concerned about His "Thou shalt not kill" or our "Thou shalt not immigrate"??? Illegal immigration sort of falls into the realm of "free market". The free market folks (not that there really is one) are all for it as long as they have control. But the minute they perceive their well-being is threatened they, then, rise up in holy indignation. Cliff, you are a farmer, right? Don't tell me you enjoy being under the thumb of "ADM"...and the Farm Bill. I wish the farmers would rise up in "holy indignation" on this matter...and start farming again. Regardless, there are a lot of things that could be improved on all counts here. And the "ADM" Subsidy Package that masquerades as a Farm Bill is a lot more "black and white" than the immigration issues, in my book.
It seems that immigration and emigration have been confused over time. My grandmother and great-grandfather emigrated from Russia because the Bolsheviks and the Menschaviks were both killing Mennonites based on their beliefs, and the simple fact that both groups thought the Mennonites were rich because they owned land.
They went to a lot of trouble to legally enter any country they went to, and the documentation is a part of our history. Illegal immigration is the issue. People who sneak into a country without following the law, and purely for financial gain, deserve to be prosecuted and deported. Legal immigration is difficult because the illegals have given it a bad name. I personally have mixed feelings for legal immigrants who send most of their money back to their native country, rather than seeking entry to the relatives they are supporting. Emigrants built this country, and improved their own lot in the process. Illegal immigrants are a drag on moral priciple and those who would make life better for everyone. |
