Prayer Etiquette

Jacob is being dedicated soon and we’re hosting dinner afterwards.

The guest list includes the pastor and his family, a retired pastor and his wife (aka my grandparents), and two persons who are aspiring to be pastors. Other assorted family will also be there.

I need the collective knowledge of the blog-o-sphere:

Who should be asked to pray before the meal? Are there rules about this?

Hi Terah — I’m not Emily Post on these things but do have some thoughts.

1st, honor to the retired pastor [besides he is the greatgrandfather too], he would be delighted.
2nd, this is John’s house, there is no problem with him saying it. If there weren’t ministers there, for sure he would be a VERY proper choice.
3rd, if your current minister is a really good family friend you may feel more obligated to have him pray.
4th, every one who wanted could pray. John, then would be logical to ask a start and to finish when he feels people are finished.

Did this help any?

Terah,
I think Jim is right. It would be appropriate for you or John to offer the before meal prayer.
I think asking Jacob’s great-grandfather would fabulous.
Just make sure you give whoever your you’re going to ask a heads up.
Have a lovely day.
