Here's an interesting dialing fact.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Numbering_Plan#History">According to Wikipedia</a>, when area codes were first introduced, they were sorted to minimize dialing time. The most heavily-populated area codes got numbers that could be dialed quickest on a rotary phone, while the more sparsely-populated areas got the numbers that required a longer dialing time. New York City got 212, which was the shortest to dial. To answer the inevitable question, Wikipedia states "Four areas received the then-maximum number of 21 clicks: South Dakota (605), North Carolina (704), South Carolina (803), and Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island in the Canadian Maritimes (902)." See, rotary dialing *was* a lot more interesting. <grin>
Did I mention my husband is a geek? After his comment I'm not sure which to do first: laugh, shake my head, or roll my eyes!
I confess to putting phone numbers in the phone memory, but only because I have to use my bifocals to dial and it makes me dizzy having to look back and forth from the phone book to the dial! Party lines were a riot but not always a "community builder" depending on what Mrs. Beasely had to say about Mrs. Colvin... still, it was a good way to find out what was going on!
