The Politics of Religion

“Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson has called for the United States to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him 'a terrific danger' bent on exporting Communism and Islamic extremism across the Americas. Robertson called Chavez 'a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us badly.'” (read the story here)

This was the lead paragraph on cnn.com about this story. I read it twice because I thought I must have misunderstood it the first time. But, no. Apparently my Bible was written by someone different than the author of Robertson's Bible. I didn't realize that the true way to be Christian was to ask your country to kill someone because you don't like their politics. (Interesting that Robertson refers to a "huge pool of oil".)

Here I've spent my whole life believing that Jesus said to love your enemies as your self and pray for those who persecute you and do unto others as you would have them do unto you and blessed are the peacemakers for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

O God, please have mercy on us all for we know not what we are doing.
