After listening to me complain (for the millionth time) about how much I hate to wash ziploc bags, John helped me make a decision. His questions were:
How much do plastic bags cost?
How many do you actually use?
How much time do they take to wash?
How much time do they take to complain about?
Is it better for the environment to throw out a bag or to use up resources washing it?
Luckily I had an econ class in college, so after answering John's helpful questions, I could ascertain that the cost of reusing plastic bags is much higher than the benefit. I still have to take a deep breath and remind myself of this when I throw out each used bag. But, once the bag is in the trash, I feel a little giddy.
Don't tell anyone at church that I do this. I think that reusing every possible food container that can be reused (bread sacks, McDonald's salad containers, etc.) is a membership requirement!
