This story is in a recently published cookbook,
Simply In Season, that encourages using locally produced foods (from your own garden, a farmers' market, etc.) and encourages us to actually think about the foods we eat. This cookbook has made me think a lot!
Anyway, the cookbook has little stories and quotes about food throughout. This particular story reminded me of John's grandpa.
"This spring my father, who had been a farmer for over 50 years, was in the hospital, so I asked him 'What do you think Darren [my brother] should seed this year, Dad?'
'Money', he replied.
When my uncle heard this, he requested that an acre of money be seeded for him as well. Dad responded that Darren better plant American money. The conversation went on to crops like lentils and wheat and today's market.
Finally I said, 'If you were seeding this spring what would you plant, Dad?'
He responded, 'Hope'
